Making the Manifesto
The process of drafting the Manifesto involved the participation of dozens of individuals, who are identified here. Notes from the meetings and workshops can be found here, which give a sense of the debates underpinning the development work. These are not-verbatim transcripts, but they are a fair account of the meetings which were used by the participants in working on the text. The workshops were sponsored by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, they were hosted by Professor Driscoll and Dr Raven and administrative and editorial support was provided by Dr Kasten.
The Manifesto is illustrated by images drawn from a series of case studies which are intended as examples of good practice of socially engaged medieval archaeology. Short summaries of the case studies are included with additional images and links to project web sites. The concentration of these case studies in northern and western Europe does not reflect the true distribution or significance of medieval archaeology within Europe. In time we hope to include examples of excellent practice from every corner of Europe and beyond.
The Manifesto text was developed in English, but it is hoped to translate it into other European languages. A template for the Manifesto including the images and design lay out is provided on the website and it is intended that in future versions in other languages can be downloaded here.
